# An offline journaling app Open the app on a plane, in a cabin, on a phone with no signal. Cozy works the same way, because everything it needs is already on your computer. A lot of journaling apps say "offline" and quietly mean "works offline for a while, then needs to phone home." I wanted a journal that never needs to phone anywhere. That's Cozy. ## What "offline" means here - **No login.** There's no account to authenticate, so the app never asks the internet for permission to open. - **No server calls.** Cozy doesn't talk to a backend because there isn't one. The app is the whole product. - **No license check on the network.** Once you have the app, you have the app. - **Files on your computer.** Your journal is a folder. Reading and writing happens locally, the way it did in the '90s. ## Why this matters People who go looking for an offline journal usually want one of two things. Privacy, entries shouldn't leave the machine. Or reliability, the app should still open on a laptop that hasn't seen Wi-Fi in three days. Cozy answers both with the same shrug: there is no server. ## Travel, cabins, long flights Some of the best journaling happens in places with no signal. Cozy opens the same way whether you're on fiber internet or in airplane mode. The calendar still works. Photos you've already added still load. Cozy is a desktop app with no server. It doesn't need an internet connection at any point, not to install, not to write, not to open old entries. What's the best fully offline diary app? If you want a desktop diary that never touches the internet, keeps your entries as plain files, and doesn't ask you to create an account, Cozy is built for exactly that. Will Cozy try to sync to the cloud automatically? No. Cozy doesn't run a sync service and doesn't have an account. If you want your journal on two devices, you opt into that yourself by putting the folder in iCloud, Dropbox, or any similar service. Cozy for iPhone and iPad reads iCloud Drive only, since that's the one folder iOS lets an app into. Can I read old entries without an internet connection? Yes. Every entry is a plain text file in a folder on your computer. You can read them in Cozy, or in any text editor, whether or not you're online. Does Cozy work on a computer that has never been online?
