Terms and Conditions

The terms that apply when you download and use the Cozy desktop journaling app.

Last updated ·

Welcome to Cozy. By downloading, installing, or using the Cozy desktop app ("Cozy", "the app"), you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

Cozy is provided by Cantimplora Studio LLC ("we", "us"), a Wyoming limited liability company with registered address at 30 N Gould St, Suite R, Sheridan, Wyoming 82801, USA. Contact: [email protected].

1. What Cozy is

Cozy is a desktop journaling app. It saves your entries as files on your own device, in a folder you choose. There are no accounts and no Cozy-operated servers that store your content.

2. Your license to use Cozy

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Cozy on devices you own or control, for personal, non-commercial use. You may not:

3. Buying Cozy and refunds

Cozy is a paid app — a single one-time purchase of $35. There's no subscription, no trial, and no recurring charge. Your purchase includes all updates up to the next major version; that future major version will be a separate paid upgrade.

Purchases and license keys are handled by Polar, our merchant of record. Polar processes your payment, issues your license key, and appears on your statement. Their terms and privacy policy cover the payment itself.

If Cozy isn't for you, just email [email protected] within 14 days of your purchase and I'll refund you in full, no questions asked.

4. Your content is yours

You own everything you write in Cozy. We claim no rights over your entries. Because your files live on your device, you are responsible for backing them up. We strongly recommend keeping the journal folder in a backed-up location (Time Machine, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, an external drive — whatever you trust).

5. Third-party services

Cozy uses a small number of third-party services to function:

If your journal folder is inside a cloud-sync service (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), that service handles the sync under its own terms. Those third parties have their own terms and privacy policies, and we are not responsible for them.

6. The website and newsletter

The marketing site at cozyjournal.app is hosted on Cloudflare Pages and uses PostHog (EU-hosted product analytics) to measure traffic and newsletter signups. If you submit your email via the newsletter form, it is sent to Substack, which delivers the newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time. Each of these services operates under its own terms.

7. Updates

Cozy may check for and download updates automatically so you always have the latest version. By using the app, you consent to these update checks. You can decline to install an update by quitting the app before it applies, or by using an older installer — but we recommend staying current for security and stability.

8. No warranty

Cozy is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will meet your specific needs. You use Cozy at your own risk.

In particular: Cozy reads and writes files on your device. While we do our best to handle your data carefully, you are responsible for backups. We are not responsible for lost, corrupted, or accidentally deleted entries.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event will we be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of Cozy — even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app is limited to the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the claim (which may be zero).

Some jurisdictions don't allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

10. Termination

You can stop using Cozy at any time by uninstalling it. We may discontinue the app, or any feature of it, at any time. Your locally stored journal files are unaffected by uninstalling the app and remain on your device until you delete them.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date above reflects the latest version. Continued use of Cozy after changes means you accept the new terms. Material changes will be highlighted on https://cozyjournal.app.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought exclusively before the state or federal courts located in Wyoming, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
